Many of the islands where coffee is grown were formed by volcanic activity. Thanks to this, the soil is rich in nutrients and ideal for growing coffee. Up to 65% of coffee production actually comes from Sumatra. Sumatrian coffee is usually a mix of several varieties. It is not a tradition to grow specific species here. However, this does not reflect the quality of the coffee. The island has three main growing regions: Aceh, Lake Toba and Mangkuraja. The Lintong and Mandheling varieties are quite rare and are grown in the Aceh region, in the small valley surrounding Lake Tawar and Takengon. Both varieties are grown without any pesticides. What will appeal to you at first sight is a special feature of this coffee: the colour of raw beans - not green, but light brown. This colour is caused by semi-washed processing, which is a combination of wet and dry methods, but compared to honey method, there is a difference in the order of activities. The name of the Queen Ketiara cooperative is based on the fact that coffee is mainly grown by women. This cooperation is one of the largest in Indonesia.
